Kinja'd!!!

Spent some (okay, too much) time today with the 4Runner and some compound. It’s not perfect but it’s a whole lot better than it was. I’ll be finishing this ‘project’ tomorrow, will have a couple more pictures and details then. I’ve had this truck for over a year and hadn’t polished it until now because, frankly, it hardly needed it. The above picture is the worst of the “before” and without a 500W halogen light right on it you couldn’t see much issue.

It does look much better now (and the weird fallout it picked up over a week at the airport this spring is finally gone from the hood and roof ) and I think gained about two shades of green-ness. I knew this paint was pretty soft, but damn I didn’t realize it was literally “I can easily leave scratches with my fingernail” soft.

Brake dust and other fallout crap from cars and other vehicles is no joke. I was selling a car for someone and left it parked in the lot at my shop. Within a week the paint was disgusting again. I use chemical decontamination sprays (Gtechniq W6) and the spray turns chemical when it comes into contact with any fallout contamination. After just a week when I went to clean it again the white car was purple.

This appeared over a 12-day stay at the airport while I was away for work, whatever it was looked like brake dust on a wheel does, but it exclusively was on the horizontal surfaces of the car, and pretty well baked into the paint. Not sure if it was from planes on the approach/takeoff over that part of the lot or what, but it took a light polish (or too-aggressive claying) to remove it (though I didn’t try a spray like that; only tried the stuff I had on-hand since I knew it’d be getting polished eventually anyway) .

You’re welcome :)

It reminds me of my second vehicle/first truck. A meadow green '98 S-10. That was a damn good little truck.

A friend of mine has a dark green S10 of that generation, it’s in pretty good shape. Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of it to share.

Brake dust from any source will absolutely find its way into to the paint and bake. I think in my case at the shop it was loose dust from brake jobs. In your case it was coming off the planes and cars all around.

The chemicals sprays basically melt most, if not all, of that fallout away. What’s left are most organic materials which should require only mild to medium clay.

I've got a wholesale account with Detailed Image.com and can send things out at a discount. But they're also just a fantastic resource for new to professional detailers.

Quick info on what you used, and how you did this? I want to do the same for my Tundra. It’s 20 years old and it’s never been polished.

Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound
Lake County Orange Polishing Pad
Porter-Cable 7424XP (with a velcro backing plate for the pad)
About 3-4 hours of elbow grease
A handful of microfibers
